Carbon Steel : Expanded Metal
Standard and Flattened
Expanded metal sheets is created in a process where coils of steel run though and expansion die which cuts slits into the metal, then stretches it up to ten times its original length. The result is metal with an open diamond pattern. Expanded metal is dimensioned by the thickness of the sheet, which is called the strand, and the direction of the diamond pattern. The direction of the sheet parallel to the long side of the diamond is the length of the sheet. The direction of the short side of the diamond is the width of the sheet. The as-cut pattern is referred to as standard, a row of strands, are attached to the next row by and overlap, called a bond. A standard pattern may be run through flattening rollers producing a flat sheet. Expanded metal is used for enclosures where air and or light passage is desirable. Flattened expanded metal is available painted or plated for ornamental grillwork screening. The exact diamond pattern is called a style and expanded metal is available in several styles, sold by length and width of the sheet. The sheet is also designated by gage thickness, which is the thickness before expanding and or flattening the metal.
