Carbon steel pipe is general-purpose pipe used for non-pressure vessel process applications. Unlike tubing, which is exact size, pipe is a relative size; with wall thickness differing by type know as schedule. To specify pipe, the diameter of the pipe and the schedule is given. The most common steel pipe is schedule 40 black pipe. The technical designation for a 1 inch, schedule 40 black pipe would be ; NPS 1 Sch 40. This pipe would have an OD of 1.315” and a wall thickness of .133”
